Hawaii parks receive $2.7M for improvements

Advertiser Staff

Gov. Linda Lingle released $2.7 million yesterday for the design and construction of public accessibility improvements at state Department of Land and Natural Resources recreational areas and facilities throughout Hawai'i.

"State parks and recreational areas provide residents and visitors with places where they can hike, fish and explore the outdoors, or simply relax," Lingle said in a released statement. "These improvements will ensure that more people are able to enjoy Hawai'i's beautiful natural environment."

The projects are part of the administration's ongoing efforts to improve state parks and small boat harbors and include renovations to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Construction is scheduled to be completed by December 2009.

The following locations will receive accessibility upgrades:

Big Island

  • Lapakahi State Historical Park

  • Hilo Division of Forestry and Wildlife baseyard office

  • Keanakolu bunkhouse and ranger cabin

  • Kekaha Kai State Park

  • Kalopa State Park
