Advertiser Staff
The Department of Land and Natural Resources will be working with several community volunteer groups tomorrow to begin replanting a naupaka "lei" on the ocean-facing slopes of Diamond Head State Monument. The naupaka will be planted on the mauka side of Diamond Head Road in the area between Beach Road and the "Surfers' Park."
Motorists are advised that parking will not be allowed from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on either side of Diamond Head Road, from Beach Road to the City and County's "Surfers Park."
In addition, the Kapi'olani Park-bound lane will be closed and traffic will be counter-flowed in the Kahala-bound lane during this time.
The Diamond Head State Monument Foundation will lead various volunteer groups in the project. DLNR is providing logistical support for this beautification project, including approximately 1,100 naupaka plants, tools, and safety equipment for volunteers to use.
"We appreciate the kokua of the public to travel safety and watch out for our community volunteers who are giving their time to beautify Diamond Head. We are grateful for their hard work," DLNR Chairperson Laura H. Thielen said in a news release.
"Planting will take place in this location because it is the area which will be least impacted by our future rockfall mitigation project at Diamond Head. Once we have completed the rockfall mitigation and slope stabilization improvements, we hope community volunteers will return to help complete the naupaka lei," Thielen said.
The original naupaka lei was planted about 10 years ago by the Friends of Diamond Head, who also helped to maintain the band of greenery.
Volunteers are still welcome for tomorrow's planting project. For additional information, contact the Diamond Head State Monument Foundation, Clark Hatch, president, at 739-2515 or e-mail hatch@hawaii.rr.com.
