The City and County of Honolulu is accepting applications for the position of emergency medical technician I trainee.

All applicants must apply online at www.honolulu.gov/hr, no later than Thursday, December 6, 2007. Applicants may use free public internet access at city district parks in Kalihi Valley, Mililani, Wahiawa, Waianae and Waimanalo. Free online access is also available at all state libraries and the University of Hawaii's public computer labs.

Information regarding the EMT I trainee position can also be found on the city Department of Human Resources website at www.honolulu.gov/hr. All questions regarding the application process should be directed to the Department of Human Resources at 768-8536.

"This is a good workforce development opportunity and it will help the Emergency Medical Services Division hire, train and maintain a solid base of qualified professionals," said Honolulu Emergency Services Department Director Elizabeth Char, M.D. "We encourage anyone interested in a long-term and meaningful career in public safety to apply for the EMT position."

Starting pay for the EMT I trainee position is $2,917 per month. Applicants must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, a nationally recognized CPR certificate and a valid Class 3 driver's license at time of application. A copy of their nationally recognized CPR certificate and valid driver's license must be submitted within seven days of filing their application.

Qualified applicants will be scheduled to take a written test on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008, in Honolulu. They will be notified by mail approximately seven days before the test. Those who pass the written test will then be interviewed. Those who pass the oral interview process will then be scheduled for a physical examination and a suitability evaluation.

Persons accepted as trainees will undergo approximately six months of training and upon completion will progress to the level of EMT-II. They will then be assigned to work at one of the City's Emergency Medical Services ambulance units.
