Associated Press

GREELEY, Colo. — Tremayne Kirkland caught two touchdown passes as Portland State broke a five-game losing streak to end the season with a 31-21 win today over Northern Colorado.

The Vikings (3-8, 3-5 Big Sky) led 24-21 before sealing the win with a time-consuming 80-yard drive in the fourth quarter. With 4:54 to go, Ronnie Fa'avae ran 14 yards for a touchdown, and Northern Colorado (1-11, 1-7) couldn't score again.

Portland State, coached by former Hawai'i defensive coordinator Jerry Glanville, took a 17-0 lead with 9:49 to go in the second half before Northern Colorado capitalized on the Vikings' mistakes to score two touchdowns.

Reggie Joseph fumbled a punt return, and C.J. Stemo recovered on the Portland State 44. Three plays later, Dominic Breazeale hit Brandon Smith on a 33-yard TD pass to cut the lead to 17-7.

On the Vikings' next possession, Stephen Michon intercepted Drew Hubel and returned it 26 yards. Breazeale led Northern Colorado on a 41-yard drive capped with a 2-yard pass to David Woods to pull to 17-14 before halftime.

Jimmy Collins took over at quarterback in the third after Hubel's fourth interception and had a 17-yard toss to Kirkland for a touchdown, putting Portland State ahead 24-14.

Breazeale scored on a five-yard run to get the Bears within 24-21 with 10:37 left.

Hubel was 21 for 38 for 248 passing yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions. Collins was 10 for 15 for 86 yards and one touchdown, with 26 rushing yards.
