Kalihi man facing assault charges in Waikiki attack

Advertiser Staff

Charges are pending against a 29-year-old Kalihi man who allegedly punched a man and broke his jaw during an early morning brawl today at Royal Hawaiian and Kalakaua avenues in Waikiki.

The victim, 23, was not a participant in the fight, police said.

The injured man told police he and an acquaintance encountered a large group engaged in a fight. As they were walking past the fight, the suspect allegedly punched the victim for no reason.

The suspect was arrested at 3:54 a.m. on suspicion of second-degree assault. He was uncharged but still in police custody at the main station cellblock tonight at 9.

Police, firefighters and city paramedics responded to the fight at the intersection of Kalakaua and Royal Hawaiian avenues shortly before 4 a.m.
