NFL: Giants LB Kiwanuka breaks left leg against Lions

Advertiser Staff

DETROIT — New York linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka broke his left leg today against the Detroit Lions, and Giants coach Tom Coughlin said he might be out for the season.

"It's obviously a big loss for us," Coughlin said.

Giants running back Brandon Jacobs was sidelined with a hamstring injury, but Coughlin said he was not sure how serious it was.

"We'll have to evaluate that," Coughlin said.

Kiwanuka was hurt when teammate Osi Umenyiora rolled into him while making a tackle on the second play of the game. He was helped off the field, keeping his left foot off the ground, and was later taken toward the locker room on a cart.

X-rays revealed Kiwanuka broke his fibula.

Late in the third quarter, Jacobs limped off the field while trying to keep weight off his left leg and did not return.

Lions backup safety Idress Bashir injured his right knee on the opening kickoff and was carted off the field.
