Kaimuki scored an impressive victory last night against Kamehameha-Hawai'i, and also pulled off an impressive statistical feat: more points than total yards allowed.

Kaimuki allowed just 20 total yards and Kapono Kaiwi-Barrionuebo threw two touchdown passes to Chezz Ramos-Dias in a 22-0 victory in the first round of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Division II State Football Championships at Kaiser.

Kaimuki, the O'ahu Interscholastic Association White champion, will play Maui Interscholastic League champion Lahainaluna Saturday at War Memorial Stadium.

"That's going to be a dog fight. Lahainaluna is (seeded) No. 1. They're the team to beat," said Kaimuki coach Darren Johnson.

The Bulldogs held the Warriors to minus-34 yards rushing and 54 passing.

"Our defense has been doing it for us all year," Johnson said. "We rely on them. They gave us the ball in good field position. It makes a difference when you have to drive the ball 50 or 40 yards as opposed to 80 or 90 yards."

Justin Paderes rushed 27 times for 111 yards for the Bulldogs, who had 190 yards on the ground.

"It was a tough game, but we have to thank our defense," said Paderes, a 5-foot-2, 135-pound junior. "Our defense was tremendous. They were holding their offense down."

Ramos-Dias' only two receptions went for touchdowns — an 8-yarder late in the first half and a 17-yarder in the fourth.

"They were putting too many guys in the box and we had to throw a little," Johnson said. "Fortunately we had him open in the end zone twice."

Kamehameha-Hawai'i reached as far as the Bulldogs' 20 in the first half, but wound up punting after losing yardage on penalties. The Warriors reached the Kaimuki 11 on their final possession, but time ran out.

Kamehameha-Hawai'i, the Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion, also lost a fumble and threw an interception.

"They have some good talent on that defense," said Kamehameha-Hawai'i coach Ulima Afoa. "They have some big guys that can run around a little bit. One of our weaknesses was a young offensive line and it was exposed tonight."

Kaimuki (11-1) scored on its first possession, driving 62 yards on 11 plays and scoring on a 1-yard sneak by Kaiwi-Barrionuebo. Paderes had eight carries for 28 yards on the drive.

Paderes left the game midway through the second period with a right ankle injury, but returned in the second half.

"I had to do what I had to do," Paderes said.

Kamehameha-Hawai'i (8-5) was pinned back at its 10 to start its second possession of the second period.

A bad snap in shotgun formation on first down forced quarterback Nick Miyasato to fall on the ball in the end zone for a safety with 6:55 left.

Kaimuki's Joshua Gacusana returned the free kick 34 yards to the Bulldogs' 49. Eight plays later, Kaiwi-Barrionuebo found Ramos-Dias in the back of the end zone, which made it 16-0 with 2:48 left before halftime.

The second touchdown pass from Kaiwi-Barrionuebo to Ramos-Dias made it 22-0 with 7:12 left.

Gacusana had 10 carries for 45 yards, and Kaiwi-Barrionuebo was 5 of 10 passing for 33 yards.

The Warriors' Kolten Wong, one of the top rushers in the state, had 10 carries for 14 yards.
