GOING VEGAS
Historic New Frontier bites dust

By Anthony Curtis

As scheduled, the New Frontier — the second property ever to open on the Las Vegas Strip, in 1942, was imploded this month. Sent off with a booming fireworks display, the 16-story hotel tower was felled with more than 1,000 pounds of explosives to make way for the new Plaza resort, due to open in 2011. For those still wishing to pay their respects or grab a photo opportunity, the front sign and portico are still standing, but the tower has been collapsed into the pool area. Views of the rubble are easy to come by around a currently unblocked perimeter. Or you can look right at the pile driving east on the Desert Inn connector.

BIG RED: The Eiffel Tower at Paris has been turned red, lit up from base to top to launch a week of events celebrating the release of the 2007 Beaujolais Nouveau. Free wine samplings for guests and special menus at Paris restaurants are on offer.

MICHELINS: Wynn Las Vegas has been awarded Five Red Pavilions, the highest rating available, in the premiere edition of the Las Vegas Michelin Guide. It's the only resort in Las Vegas to receive such honors. Wynn's Alex restaurant was awarded two dining stars. However, the big news in dining was that the coveted three-star designation for restaurants was awarded to MGM Grand's Joe¬l Robuchon. It was the only restaurant in Las Vegas or Los Angeles to be so named.

BEER BAR: Good news for beer lovers: On Nov. 26, New York-New York will debut Pour 24, a new bar with a selection of 24 bottled and 24 draft beers. It will be on the mezzanine level and open 24 hours daily.

Q. I read that Wynn Las Vegas does not comp drinks for players who are gambling. Is this the case everywhere, or just at the bars?

A. Just the bars, and not even all of them. Players on the casino floor are still given free drinks, as are machine players at the sports book bar. The main casino's high-end B Bar is where the no-comps policy was implemented. But even that's noteworthy, as it's a policy that's never been able to last in a Las Vegas casino. Stay tuned.
