Volleyball: Puerto Rico upsets U.S. at men's World Cup

MATSUMOTO, Japan -- Puerto Rico upset the United States at the men's volleyball World Cup today, posting its first win over the U.S. team in 30 years.
Hector Soto scored 29 points and Jose Rivera had 14 points as Puerto Rico won in four sets, 25-21, 20-25, 25-17, 25-22. The Americans, who upset Brazil yesterday, fell to 1-1; Puerto Rico is 2-0.
"They had a great win yesterday and so maybe had a little bit more pressure," Puerto Rico coach Carlos D. Cardona said. "We had less pressure, didn't feel very nervous and were in a good situation. Today is a historical win for Puerto Rico."
The last time Puerto Rico beat the United States was at the 1977 Norceca Championships.
William Priddy had a team-high 16 points for the U.S. team.
"It's obviously disappointing that we didn't play with the same sense of urgency as yesterday," U.S. coach Hugh McCutheon said. "You think we would have learned from previous tournaments that you can't approach games without total intensity. Hopefully we can play better tomorrow."
In other matches, Russia (2-0) defeated Australia (1-1); Bulgaria (2-0) beat Egypt (0-2); world champion Brazil (1-1) defeated Spain (0-2); Argentina (1-1) downed Tunisia (1-1); and Japan (1-1) defeated winless South Korea.
The top three teams in the tournament qualify for next year's Beijing Olympics.
