Waianae piggery fined $53,800 for open dump

Advertiser Staff

The state Health Department has fined a Wai'anae piggery $53,800 for operating an open dump in violation of solid waste laws.

In a news release today, the state said Eco-Feeds at 87-881 'Ili'ili Road has been ordered to cease operating the open dump and to lawfully dispose of all solid waste. The dump contains non-edible waste materials such as pineapple tops, plastic utensils and containers, rubber truck seals, wood and metal scrap, all of which were separated from edible food waste for swine meal, according to the state.

The Health Department issued a warning letter to Eco-Feeds on May 11 but the business failed to respond to the warning or implement corrective action, the state said.

Eco-Feeds can request a hearing to contest the allegations or order.
