Jim Nabors to sing at City Lights tree-lighting event

Advertiser Staff

The annual Mayor's Honolulu City Lights Tree Lighting Ceremony, set for Dec. 1 on the grounds of Honolulu Hale, will feature a musical performance by Jim Nabors.

In a news release issued today, Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann said: "For 10 years he and Karen Keawehawai'i thrilled fans with their 'Friends and Nabors' holiday show at the Hawa'ii Theater. They've graciously agreed to come to Honolulu Hale and share their gift of song with the community."

The popular Honolulu City Lights event gets under way at 4 p.m. with food booths and keiki rides. At 5 p.m., there will be a holiday music concert at the historic Kawaiahao Church. And then at 6 p.m., Hannemann and his wife, Gail, will welcome the musical group Pali and special guests to help with the lighting of the official city Christmas tree.

Immediately following the tree lighting, the Public Workers Electric Light Parade will begin to pass in front of Honolulu Hale. Thousands of spectators are expected to attend the events, which will include the annual Tom Moffatt holiday concert, which this year features Kalapana, the U.S. Air Force musical group Hana Hou, Kristian Lei and Soulz.

Honolulu City Lights will again provide a Toys For Tots drop-off site, and people attending the festivities throughout the holiday season are encouraged to bring a new, gift-wrapped toy to donate.

On Saturday, Hannemann will host the Windward City Lights tree lighting ceremony. The celebration will kick off at 6 p.m. at the stage fronting the Kane'ohe Police Station. The city's Windward Christmas tree will again be set up fronting the Honolulu Fire Department's Kane'ohe station. There will be musical entertainment by HFD's Ahi Wela, the Kane'ohe Hope Chapel choir and the Koolau Senior Serenaders.

The final pre-Christmas event will be on the West side of O'ahu. The Kapolei City Lights celebration is set for Dec. 8. Hannemann and members of the University of Hawai'i Warriors football team will lead the Kapolei Electric Light Parade down Farrington Highway to Kapolei Hale, where the mayor and special guests will light the city Christmas tree.
