Hana Highway section reopened after pole repairs

Advertiser Staff

HANA, Maui — Two downed telephone poles blocked a section of Hana Highway for most of the day in Hana.

Telephone service was not interrupted, according to Hawaiian Telcom spokesman Ron Mizutani.

He said that a week ago there was a report that a truck had pulled on an overhead telephone line, causing it to droop. The incident apparently caused a crack in one pole, but the pole was judged strong enough to remain in place until repairs could be done this week, Mizutani said.

But when a second vehicle snagged the drooping line around 6 a.m. yesterday the cracked pole came down, pulling a second pole with it, he said.

The damaged pole was replaced at around 3 p.m. And the second pole was reinstalled, he said.
