Baseball: Astros sign Blum to 1-year, $1.1 million deal
Associated Press
HOUSTON Geoff Blum, who helped beat Houston in the 2005 World Series, agreed today to a $1.1 million, one-year contract with the Astros. The 34-year-old infielder played for the Astros in 2002 and '03. In 2005, his 14th-inning home run for the Chicago White Sox beat Houston in Game 3 of the World Series.
Blum hit .252 with five homers and 33 RBIs for San Diego this year. He appeared in 122 games, starting 55 at second base. He also saw time at the other three infield positions and left field.
"We're happy to have Geoff back in an Astros uniform," Houston general manager Ed Wade said. "He is a very versatile player who can fill a lot of defensive roles and he swings a very good bat. While his versatility is a big plus, Geoff also has the ability to go out and play one position on a regular basis, giving us a lot of protection on the field."
In two seasons with Houston, Blum hit .241 with 18 homers and 87 RBIs in 235 games.
His contract includes a team option for 2009.
