CBKB: UAB's Delaney out for season with knee injury

Associated Press

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — UAB point guard Paul Delaney III, who led the team in scoring as a junior, will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.

The All-Conference USA player injured his left knee while driving to the basket during Saturday's loss to Georgia Southern in the Glenn Wilkes Classic in Daytona Beach. An MRI Monday in Birmingham revealed a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Delaney is expected to apply for a medical redshirt and return next season.

"Losing Paul for the season is a big blow to our team," UAB coach Mike Davis said. "At this point in time, Paul just needs to work on his rehab and get healthy. We are praying for him and our team will support him throughout this process."

Delaney, one of only two seniors on the team, played in 90 games during his first three seasons at UAB. He started every game last season and averaged team-highs in points (15.4), minutes (37.1), assists (5.2) and steals per game (1.9).

Delaney averaged 8.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists in four games this season and made all 13 free throw attempts.

Davis signed two point guards before the season, freshman Aaron Johnson and junior college transfer Ed Berrios.
