Rainbow Wahine's Smith earns WAC hoops honor

University of Hawai'i women's basketball player Tanya Smith was named the Western Athletic Conference player of the week yesterday, the second honor of her career.
Smith led Hawai'i to a 2-1 record and a second-place finish in the Waikiki Beach Marriott Classic this past week. Smith was named to the all-tournament team after three straight double-double performances. She averaged 12.7 points and 13.7 rebounds in the three games.
GOLF
KIM LEADS QUALIFYING
Kimberly Kim had a two-shot lead after yesterday's first round of qualifying in the Polo Golf Junior Classic, at Reunion, Fla.
Kim, a former Big Island resident who now lives in Arizona, shot a 5-under-par 67 on the Independence (Watson) Course.
Luke Guthrie, of Quincy, Ill., and Cory Whitsett, the U.S. Junior champion from Houston, share the lead in the boys' division after shooting 66.
Kim's bogey-free round featured a 3-under-par 33 on the front nine, including a birdie on the par-5 first hole, and a 2-under-par 34 on the back.
"I hit it really well today — I didn't miss many greens and made a few putts," Kim said. "I think my group was having more fun than anything and that kept me really loose."
Punahou senior Stephanie Kono is tied for 46th after shooting 38-38—76.
BASKETBALL
BYUH WOMEN ROUTED
Jamey Galhar scored 11 points and Krissy Bassett added 10 as St. Martin's (Wash.) beat Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 69-43, in a women's basketball game last night at Lacey Wash.
St. Martin's (2-0) dominated the boards, 50-33.
Richelle Fenenbock scored 12 points and Agnes Tuilevuka added 11 for BYU-Hawai'i (0-3).
