Soccer: Australia, Japan, S. Korea earn Olympic berths

Associated Press

Australia, Japan and South Korea advanced to the men's soccer tournament at the Beijing Olympics, all playing to ties today during Asian qualifiers.

Australia tied 1-1 on the road against North Korea; Japan played to a scoreless tie at home against Saudi Arabia; and South Korea tied Bahrain 0-0.

A disputed goal in the 70th minute by Australia's Mark Milligan offset a score by Pak Chol-min in the 10th minute opener. Australia has 12 points in Group A and is assured first place.

Japan finished Group C with 11 points from six games. It needed only to avoid defeat against Saudi Arabia to qualify.
