Temporary Kihei recycling site opens today

Advertiser Staff

A site for a temporary Kihei recycling center will open today, Maui county officials said.

The site is located at the intersection of Liloa Drive and Halekuai Street, adjacent to Lokelani Intermediate School. Drop bins for cardboard, newspaper, glass containers, plastic bottles with necks, plastic bags (knotted) and aluminum cans will be available, but no HI-5 redemptions will be accepted. The site will be open 7 a.m. – 6 p.m., seven days a week.

The location of the temporary Kihei recycling site was selected to provide safe access without displacing any other public programs during construction at the permanent site, which is expected to be ready in approximately 90 days.

County officials said that while the temporary site can't accommodate HI-5 redemptions, Kihei residents may take their HI-5 containers to Zitro Recycling, reverse vending machines only, located on Halekuai Street behind the Salvation Army (Monday – Friday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.) or at Maui Disposal's mobile site at Hope Chapel on Welakahao Road (Wednesday – Saturday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.).
