U.S. flag DR. GRANT N. STEMMERMANN, 89, of Cincinnati, formerly of Hilo and Honolulu, died Nov. 17, 2007. Born in New York City. Noteworthy pathologist and epidemiologist; head pathologist at Hilo Memorial Hospital; director of Laboratories at Kuakini Hospital. Principal investigator of the Honolulu Heart Program contacting men who had fought in World War II in the famed 442nd Regimental Combat Team and gathered an impressive amount of background information and closely followed the men in an ongoing study. With the collaboration of colleagues in Japan, he expanded these studies of second-generation Japanese-Americans in Hawai'i to include data from similar populations in Japan with a view to assessing the impact of western lifestyles upon their disease experience. Retired from the University of Cincinnati Medical School. Served as a battalion surgeon with the 37th Engineer Combat Battalion in Okinawa during World War II. Survived by wife, Nell; daughters, Maile, Mele and Rachel. Donations to McGill University (Bursary Fund, Faculty of Medicine class of 1943) and the Cincinnati Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
