For Honolulu's Wes Shibata, winning the Pigskin Picks contest comes down to more luck than skill.

Shibata, 62, who works maintenance at McKinley High School, correctly picked the winners of 14 of 15 games. His ballot was picked among all the others with 14-1 records.

Shibata wins a trip for two to Las Vegas and $500. He said he's been playing the contest every year since the Las Vegas prize package was introduced.

He said he submits about 10 entries each week and has certain strategies.

But to win, he says, "it all comes down to L-U-C-K."

Will that luck translate to winnings in V-E-G-A-S?

Shibata, who tries to visit there once a year, says he's had luck in the past.

On one trip — in which he said he got a "lucky penny" from a friend — Shibata said he made more than $30,000 from separate games, such as a quarter machine, black jack and craps. He said he rolled the dice for 45 minutes.

"It was awesome," he said of getting an early-morning phone call from KSSK radio, which announces the winners every Monday. "Entering every week, just gotta be very lucky and I guess I was very lucky."
