Advertiser Staff

Former Big Island resident Kimberly Kim advanced to the final of the Polo Golf Junior Classic at Reunion, Fla., by winning two matches today.

Kim, who resides in Arizona, defeated Marika Lendl of Bradenton, Fla., 3 and 1 in the semifinal. Earlier this morning, Kim defeated Marina Alex of Wayne, N.J., 2 and 1.

Awaiting Kim, 16, in tomorrow's match-play final could be Punahou School senior Stephanie Kono. Kono was even through 22 holes with Vicky Hurst when their semifinal was suspended due to darkness.

It will resume tomorrow.

Kono led 2-up after the 10th hole and held that lead until the 15th when Hurst birdied and Kono bogeyed. Hurst evened the match on the 16th with a par while Kono bogeyed again. Neither golfer led since.

In the quarterfinals, Kono defeated Jaclyn Sweeney of Bradenton Fla., 4 and 3. Hurst, of Melbourne, Fla., needed 20 holes to defeat Stacey Kim in their quarterfinal.
