KAPOLEI
'Grim Reaper' warns high school students

Advertiser Staff

A mock car crash and funeral were held yesterday at Kapolei High School as a reminder to an estimated 1,800 students about the dangers of underage drinking and driving.

The mock crash involved students with the Kapolei Peer Education program. The scenario involved a young inebriated driver with a passenger striking another moving vehicle with two occupants at Kapolei Parkway and Malu'ohai Street.

On Monday, a person dressed as the Grim Reaper called out the names of students every 15 minutes. Mock obits were read about each of the students, and they were asked to wear "living dead" T-shirts and not speak to classmates throughout the day.

Officials with the national program "Every 15 Minutes" say a person dies from an alcohol-related traffic collision every 15 minutes in the United States.
