Kauai's Powers wins Reef Hawaiian Pro men's surfing

Kaua'i's Roy Powers rode some powerful North Shore waves to victory in the Reef Hawaiian Pro men's surfing contest today.The final day of the contest was run in big waves at Hale'iwa Ali'i Beach. Wave-face heights ranged from 10 to 20 feet throughout the day.
Powers, 26, received a two-wave score of 18.84 for his first victory in a major Hawai'i event.
The Reef Hawaiian Pro is the first jewel in the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing series.
Powers received a near-perfect score of 9.17 (out of 10) early in the 35-minute final. He then clinched the victory with around 15 minutes remaining with a score of 9.67.
He earned $15,000 for the victory.
Bede Durbidge of Australia placed second with a two-wave score of 13.74. Joel Parkinson of Australia was third, and Sean Moody of Hale'iwa was fourth.
Kaua'i's Andy Irons, who won the Hawaiian Pro and the overall Triple Crown series last year, was eliminated in the quarterfinals.
Australia's Mick Fanning, the recently crowned 2007 world champion, was also eliminated in the quarterfinals.
The second event in the Triple Crown series the O'Neill World Cup of Surfing will start its holding period on Monday at Sunset Beach.
