Mission Houses toy and games exhibit opens Nov. 29

Advertiser Staff

The Mission Houses Museum commemorates its 100th "birth" day at an opening reception for "Playthings: Toys & Games," a special exhibition inspired by the Mission Houses Museum's permanent collection, 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29 at the Chamberlain House Galleries, Mission Houses Museum, 553 South King St.

There will be refreshments and entertainment. The reception is open to the public.

Parking is available off South King Street on Kawaiahao and Mission Lanes, Kawaiahao Plaza and Honolulu City & County lots.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

When the New England missionaries came to Hawaii in the 19th century, their children brought toys and adapted a number of traditional Hawaiian toys. New games also evolved from the experiences these children had in Hawaii. The exhibition features more than 200 objects, including loaned 19th and 20th century toys and images from private collectors including Rick Ralston and the Bishop Museum, with support from Martin & MacArthur and Outrigger Waikiki.

The exhibition continues through April 19, 2008.

The Mission House Museum and Library are programs of the Hawaiian Mission Children's Society, a not-for-profit organization founded in 1852. In 1907, the Hawaiian Mission Children's Society adopted its first Charter, setting in motion or giving birth to the idea for a museum.
