Volleyball: U.S. men sweep Egypt in World Cup

TOYAMA, Japan — The United States improved to 3-2 at the volleyball Men's World Cup with a three-game win today over winless Egypt behind 18 points from Sean Rooney.

William Priddy added 12 points in the Americans' 25-22, 25-18, 25-19 victory.

Honolulu's Clay Stanley (Kaiser High, University of Hawai'i) added seven points on five kills and two aces.

The top three teams at the tournament will qualify for the Beijing Olympics.

"We're trying to concentrate on playing better volleyball each day and we achieved that today," U.S. captain Thomas Hoff said. "Sean Rooney is one of the up-and-comers on the U.S. team."

In other matches, Alexey Kuleshov scored a game-high 15 points as Russia overpowered Japan 25-19, 25-20, 25-23 to improve to 5-0.

Hector Soto scored 21 points as Puerto Rico downed Spain in three games.

Olympic and world champion Brazil downed Bulgaria 25-14, 25-21, 25-19 to improve to 4-1. Bulgaria, which lost to the United States on Thursday, dropped to 3-2.

Argentina defeated Australia 25-21, 21-25, 25-14, 25-23. Both teams are 3-2.
