1 critical, 2 others hurt in Waialua motorcycle wreck

Advertiser Staff

Three young men were injured — at least one of them critically — when their motorcycles crashed on a winding stretch of Kaukonahua Road in Waialua today, officials now say.

Police report that at least three motorcycles were involved in the crash that occurred shortly after 3 p.m. between Thompson Corner and Wilikina Road.

One man in his mid-20s was first taken to Wahiawa General Hospital in critical condition. He was stabilized there and then transferred to The Queen's Medical Center, said Bryan Cheplic, a spokesman for the Honolulu Emergency Medical Services Department.

Two other men — both in their 20s — were reported in serious condition following the crash. They were being treated at Queen's, Cheplic said.

The crash occurred on a deadly stretch of Kaukonahua Road known by local residents as Snake Road because of its many twists and turns on a long downhill stretch.

The accident occurred in the same stretch of road where a 14-year-old boy died and his older brother was injured late last month in a moped accident.

Kaukonahua Road was closed for hours but has been reopened.
