Alcohol, speed factors in critical North Shore crash

Advertiser Staff

Alcohol and speed appeared to be factors in a crash on Kamehameha Highway Friday night that left a 56-year-old man in critical condition, police said today.

The crash happened about 8:10 p.m. near Ke Nui Road in Sunset Beach.

Police said the 56-year-old driver appeared to be speeding and under the influence of alcohol when he lost control, crossed the centerline and sideswiped a 1997 Toyota minivan, driven by a 48-year-old North Shore man.

The 56-year-old, also a North Shore resident, was driving a 1988 two-door sedan. He was taken in critical condition to The Queen's Medical Center.

The other driver was not injured.

Both men were wearing seatbelts, police said.
