Three winning shows on local stages

There's nothing like live theater. Here are a few that earned thumbs-up comments by The Advertiser's theater critic Joseph T. Rozmiarek:
"Fences": This is a movingly human and wonderfully theatrical story of a Negro League baseball player turned bitter garbage collector. "Fiddler On the Roof": Excellent performances among the principal cast make clear the message in defense of "Tradition!" Dennis Proulx and Shari Lynn as Tevye and Golde nail down the comedy and the songs just right in this old favorite. 7:30 p.m. today4, Friday and Dec. 1, Richardson Theatre, Fort Shafter; $12-$20; 438-4480, www.armytheatre.com.
"Plaid Tidings": If you're old enough to get goosebumps from a guy group singing close harmony on "Perfidia," you will delight in this holiday edition reprise of "Forever Plaid." If not, you can still enjoy the music and comedy created by an excellent quartet. 8 p.m. today and 4 p.m. tomorrow, and extended run at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday-Wednesday, 8 p.m. Friday-Dec. 1, 4 p.m. Dec. 2, Manoa Valley Theatre; $35 general, $30 seniors and military, $20 for those 25 and younger; 988-6131, www.manoavalleytheatre.com.
