Early tipoff, early domination, easy victory for the University of Hawai'i women's basketball team yesterday against Lipscomb.

Four Rainbow Wahine scored in double figures and Hawai'i didn't allow a field goal until nearly nine minutes into the game in an 85-51 victory in the first round of the Jack in the Box Wahine Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center yesterday.

The game started at 11:10 a.m. to accommodate those fans who wanted to watch the Boise State-Hawai'i football game, which started at 4:05 p.m. It was the second of four first-round games.

Lipscomb, of Nashville, Tenn., missed its first 13 shots before Katie Rollins hit a field goal with 11:07 left in the first half. By that time, the Rainbow Wahine were 9 of 15 from the field and led 19-6.

"That's what got the momentum flowing early. Our defense helped our offense," said UH post player Tanya Smith.

Smith had her fourth double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Megan Tinnin scored 15 points, Dita Liepkalne added 14, and Iwona Zagrobelna 10 for Hawai'i (3-1).

"That's what we strive for; four in double figures. And two of those were off the bench (Tinnin and Zagrobelna)," said Hawai'i coach Jim Bolla.

The margin of victory was Hawai'i's largest since a 97-53 triumph over Detroit on Dec. 18, 2000.

Ebony Jones, a junior-college transfer, hit a field goal for the first points of her UH career with 48 seconds left before halftime to make it 41-20. Her basket just before the buzzer gave Hawai'i its largest lead of the half at 45-20.

Bolla warned his team of Lipscomb's 123-22 victory over Division III Fisk University earlier this season, but the Rainbow Wahine had nothing to worry about yesterday.

"I told them to not let up," he said. "I don't care who they played; 123 points is a lot to score in a 40-minute game."

The lead stretched to as large as 78-41 with 3:52 left after a layup by Saundra Cariaga.

Shannon Nishi, a third-year team member, hit a 3-pointer with 7 seconds remaining for the first field goal of her UH career.

Hawai'i outscored Lipscomb 46-8 in the paint and held a 47-35 rebounding advantage. The Rainbow Wahine also beat the Lady Bison down the floor in transition.

"Their transition game opened up a lot of things for them," said Lipscomb coach Frank Bennett.

Hawai'i made 36 of 68 field-goal attempts with 25 assists.

Point guard Amy Kotani didn't score, but had a game-high six assists. Liepkalne, who was 7 of 8 from the field, and Keisha Kanekoa each added four assists.

"We had 25 assists. That shows we're team-oriented, and that's how it should be," said Smith, who left the game with 15:15 left in the first half after injuring her right ankle. She returned four minutes later.

"I'm fine. I jumped for a ball and I turned it," she said.

Rachel Davis scored 10 points to lead Lipscomb (1-4), which was 14 of 61 from the field, including 6 of 32 in the first half.

"We played some zone and some man. We played help-side (defense) and were helping each other out," Liepkalne said.

Added Bennett: "We didn't execute very well. We didn't attack their zone in the first half."

Hawai'i will play today at 5:30 p.m. against Hartford, which beat UAB yesterday, 83-74.
