Rainbow Wahine to play Tennessee St. in first round

Advertiser Staff

Seeded 11th but sent packing, the University of Hawai'i will open the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship Friday against Tennessee State, in Louisville, Ken.

The Rainbow Wahine (26-5) are in the Penn State region. Should they beat the Tigers (20-13), making their first NCAA appearance as Ohio Valley Conference Tournament champions, they would face the winner of Louisville (22-7) and Middle Tennessee Saturday. The 'Bows beat the 23rd-ranked Cardinals in Hawai'i Sept. 2.

Tennessee State has two freshmen who graduated from Kamehameha-Hawai'i in Precious Salazar and Makena Naho'oikaika.

The NCAA committee says it seeds 16 teams then pairs them based on "geographical proximity, with the exception that teams from the same conference were not paired during the first and second rounds." Hawai'i is traveling 4,376 miles to Louisville and will probably have to leave Tuesday night.

Stanford, which is hosting a regional, was seeded first. Nebraska, seeded second, is in the Madison, Wisc., region. Penn State is seeded third, and ranked first in the CSTV/AVCA Coaches Poll. Texas, in the Gainesville, Fla., region, is seeded fourth.

New Mexico State is the only other Western Athletic Conference team in the tournament. It was sent to Austin, Texas, and will play LSU in the first round.

The Big 12, Big Ten and Pacific-10 led all conferences with six teams selected. The Southeastern Conference has five teams and the West Coast and Missouri Valley conferences four.

Hawai'i, which won NCAA titles in 1982, '83 and '87, is one of nine former champions in the field.

The final four is Dec. 13 and 15 at ARCO Arena in Sacramento.
