Hawaii Baptist Academy wins 'green' certification

Hawaii Baptist Academy Middle School in Nu'uanu has earned a gold rating for leadership in energy and enviromental design by the U.S. Green Building Council.The $9.5 million middle school was completed in March 2006 adjacent to the existing high school complex on Pali Highway. It has 11 classrooms, two science labs, a computer lab, a multipurpose assembly area, administrative offices and 84 parking stalls.
The school's system saves 45 percent on energy costs, employs solar energy technology and uses a water catchment system for irrigation. The school also has low-flow, waterless and automated plumbing fixtures. Group 70 designed the building.
"Hawaii Baptist Academy and Group 70 International Inc. are to be commended for achieving LEED GOLD certification," said Rick Fedrizzi, president and chief executive officer of the U.S. Green Building Council, in a news release. "Hawaii Baptist Academy will be a showcase for high-performance, energy-efficient, healthy learning environments, and an inspiration for others."
