Hawaii man dies after crashing motorcycle

Advertiser Staff

A Kalihi man died Saturday night at The Queen's Medical Center, about five hours after crashing his motorcycle on Kaukonahua Road in Waialua at 3:04 p.m. The Honolulu medical examiner's office yesterday identified him as Robert Moberg, 26.

Moberg is the island's 59th traffic fatality. He is the 13th motorcyclist killed on O'ahu in 2007, all of them since March 21. There were nine motorcyclists killed on O'ahu in 2006.

Police vehicular homicide investigators said Moberg was riding with five other motorcyclists when he lost control of his 2002 Honda at a bend on winding Kaukonahua Road, about one-quarter mile south of Poamoho Street.

Moberg's motorcycle veered off the road, struck a right-side guardrail, spun back onto Kaukonahua and into the path of another Honda motorcycle. The impact forced the second Honda to hit a Kawasaki motorcycle, police said.

Moberg was ejected after his motorcycle hit the guardrail, police said. All three injured motorcyclists were wearing helmets. The two other motorcyclists injured were taken to the hospital in serious condition, police said.

At least two dozen people have been killed and more than 100 injured on Kaukonahua Road in the past 20 years, according to city records. So far this year, one person was killed and several others critically injured on the same road.

Last month, a 14-year-old boy died and his 15-year-old brother was injured when their mopeds crashed in the same part of Kaukonahua Road. Police said the boys were part of a group of about 60 moped riders on a North Shore outing. Gjino Kanahele, the boy killed, was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
