The Hawai'i FIRST LEGO League will this Saturday host the fifth annual Hawai'i FLL State Championship Tournament at McKinley High School.

The tournament, the state's largest scholastic robotics competition, will include 64 teams of students.

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a national educational robotics program for young people. The national FIRST LEGO League began 10 years ago. It was was introduced to Hawai'i in 2002. The program is designed as a platform for students, ages 9 to 14 years old, to develop technical and life skills through teamwork, research and building/designing autonomous robots.

"Each year, the competitive season is based on a particular theme," Sara Tamayose, Vice President of Hawai'i FLL and 2007 Tournament Coordinator, said in a news release.

"FIRST tries to choose themes based on current real-world issues. The theme this year is renewable energy and, from what I've seen so far, the students have developed a lot of great solutions."

The 2007 Hawai'i FLL State Championship Tournament — set for 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the McKinley High School gymnasium — is free and open to the public.
