Both men, ages 60 and 40, are at Straub Clinic & Hospital, according to Honolulu Emergency Services spokesman Bryan Cheplic. The older victim was initially taken to Wahiawa General Hospital before being transferred to Straub.
Investigators have not yet determined what caused the 10 a.m. van fire on Aheahe Avenue, said Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig.
The first of two responding engine companies arrived at 10:05 and found a van parked at 1134 Aheahe Avenue on fire with one man inside the vehicle, a second lying on the ground, and a downed energized electrical line next to the van.
According to Seelig, firefighters provided medical attention to the man outside the van while also putting out the fire.
Once the fire was controlled, firefighters rescued and treated the man inside the van while avoiding the energized electrical line, Seelig said. The fire was extinguished at 10:26 a.m., he said.
A police incident report said the older of the two victims was in the van.
Honolulu Fire Department investigators assess the scene on Aheahe Avenue in Whitmore Village today after a van caught on fire, injuring a man inside and another man who attempted to help the victim. A downed energized electrical line was found next to the van. BRUCE ASATO | The Honolulu Advertiser |
