Hawaii Belt Highway partially reopened

Advertiser Staff

HILO, Hawai'i — Officials have reopened one lane of Hawai'i Belt Highway from Captain Cook to Kealia Ranch south of Honaunau, allowing students at three area schools to begin going home.

Earlier today the Department of Education kept some students at school because the road to their homes was closed.

Some students at Konawaena High School, Konawaena Middle School, Konawaena Elementary School and Honaunau School remained at the schools.

At 5:45 p.m. the county said one lane of the highway was opened, and that students were being transported home by bus.

County civil defense officials said the heavy rains are expected to ease by early tonight. A flash flood warning for South Kona remained in effect.
