UH baseball camps have openings

Advertiser Staff

There are still openings for the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Winter Baseball Camps next month.

There are two different specialty camps offered during two different sessions. A Pitcher/Catcher Camp will run 9 a.m. to noon and a Hitting Camp from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 21 to 23. The same camps are available at the same times from Dec. 28 to 30.

Each camp is $120 per session. A combination of the Pitcher/Catcher Camp and the Hitting Camp is $200 is per session.

The Rainbows' coaching staff, high school coaches and UH players will be conducting the camps.

Because of the turf replacement at Les Murakami Stadium, the camps will be held at the nearby softball stadium and soccer field.

For information, call 956-6247 or download an application from www.hawaiiathletics.com/camps.html.

VOLLEYBALL

U.S. SWEEPS AUSTRALIA

Reid Priddy had 10 kills, two blocks and one ace as the U.S. men's national team completed the third round of the FIVB World Cup by sweeping Australia, 25-17, 25-12, 25-19, yesterday at Okayama, Japan.

Gabe Gardner had eight kills, one block and two aces and Clay Stanley, a Kaiser High and University of Hawai'i alum, contributed two aces.

The victory ensures that the fifth-ranked U.S. team will hold on to at least a tie for third place with a record of 6-2. The top three World Cup finishers will qualify for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

The fourth and final round of matches will be in Tokyo, with the U.S. opening against Japan on Friday.

U.S. setter Lloy Ball was named the man of the match against Australia, although he scored only one point on an ace. He was credited with 28 running sets and 22 still sets with no faults in 50 attempts. The U.S. converted 66 percent of its hitting attempts into points.

"The defense and block worked well together and we were serving well," U.S. head coach Hugh McCutcheon said. "We just need to get ready for the Japan match now in Tokyo and we're taking it one match at a time. I hope to get some good training in."
