Hawaiian Rent-All founder donates $3.4M to HCC

Associated Press

HONOLULU — Honolulu Community College is getting the biggest private donation ever for a state community college.

The co-founder of Hawaiian Rent-All, Norman Loui, has left the school $3.4 million. The former carpentry student graduated in 1961 from what was then Honolulu Technical School.

Loui founded Hawaiian Rent-All with his brother Gordon. The company at the corner of Beretania and McCully streets is well-known for the humorous sayings on its sign. It's the state's largest equipment rental company.

The donation is to go for a scholarship fund and to support carpentry and marine-education programs.

To honor Loui, the school is renaming its Kapalama Media Conference Center the Norman W. H. Loui Conference Center.
