Staffing shortage affects trash pickup on parts of Maui

The Maui News

KULA — In several Upcountry areas Wednesday, curbside trash pickups were missed because of ongoing problems with staff illnesses and shortages in the Department of Environmental Management's Solid Waste Division, The Maui News reported.

The failure to collect trash in Upcountry areas followed two consecutive days — Monday and Tuesday — when staffing shortages resulted in no residential trash pickup in West Maui neighborhoods. Trash pickups were initiated in West Maui on Wednesday, but some routes were not completed because of hazardous rain conditions, officials said.

The Upcountry areas in which garbage was not picked up include homes along Kamehamehaiki, Ainakula, Cooke and Pulehuiki streets, Kulamanu and Kulalani circles, Kapalulu Place and surrounding areas.

Solid waste officials pledged to make every effort to collect the trash that was not picked up on Wednesday. For more information, call 270-7875.
