Man charged with attacking Waialua woman

Prosecutors today charged a 38-year-old man for allegedly breaking into a Waialua home and attempting to rape a woman resident.

Mark Stephen Panela, who listed no local address, was charged at 1 p.m. with first-degree burglary, first-degree attempted sex assault and kidnapping. He was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail pending an initial appearance tomorrow at District Court.

According to a court affidavit, the 49-year-old complainant was awakened Wednesday morning by a man holding her down in the bedroom of her Waialua Beach Road home. The woman told police the man showed her a knife, tied her hands behind her back and began pulling her shorts down, the affidavit said.

The woman screamed and began fighting off her attacker. Her neighbor called police after hearing her screams.

The woman was running toward the front door of her home screaming "help, he's trying to rape me" at 5:21 a.m. when police arrived, the court document said.

The woman was not acquainted with the suspect and did not give him permission to enter her home, the affidavit said.

Panela was arrested at the scene.
