Sun's return in Hawaii today could be short-lived

Enjoy the sunshine...while it lasts, anyway.

The National Weather Service is reporting that while the heavy showers and thunderstorms dissipated overnight, the threat of a return of the wet stuff will remain with us into the afternoon today.

A weather system is lingering north of the Islands and is packed with plenty of moisture.

Thunderstorms are possible on the Big Island this afternoon and evening, forecasters said.

Light south to southeast winds will continue through the weekend, then give way to northerlies and finally northeasterly trades as a series of fronts arrive beginning late this weekend.

Here's a closer look at what to expect the next few days:

Today, mostly sunny with isolated showers in the morning, then partly sunny with scattered showers in the afternoon. Locally heavy rainfall possible in the afternoon. Highs around 80. South winds around 10 mph in the morning becoming light. Chance of rain 50 percent.

Tonight, mostly cloudy with scattered showers. Locally heavy rainfall possible in the evening. Lows 68 to 73. Light winds. Chance of rain 50 percent.

Friday, partly sunny with scattered showers. Highs 76 to 81. South winds around 10 mph. Chance of rain 40 percent.

Friday night, mostly cloudy with scattered showers. Lows 68 to 73. North winds around 10 mph. Chance of rain 50 percent.

Saturday, mostly cloudy with numerous showers. Highs 76 to 81. South winds 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 60 percent.

Saturday night, mostly cloudy with scattered showers. Lows 68 to 73. North winds 15 to 20 mph. Chance of rain 40 percent.
