Eugene Fernandez, the man who was burned when his van caught fire yesterday morning in Wahiawa's Whitmore Village, died overnight as a result of his injuries, an official with Straub Hospital & Clinic said.

Another man who tried to save him remains at Straub in serious condition.

Fernandez' van, which was parked on Aheahe Avenue, may have caught fire when a Hawaiian Electric utility line fell on it. Fernandez, believed to have been around 60, slept in the van, witnesses said.

Paramedics said he sustained burns over half his body and that they had to revive him at the scene.

A Straub spokeswoman also said that Troy Pace Sr., whom witnesses said appeared to be have been shocked by electricity when he grabbed the van's door handle in an effort to save Fernandez, remained in serious condition with undisclosed injuries.

Pace, believed to be in his 40s, also lives in the Whitmore Village area, neighbors said.
