Peru's Mulanovich wins Roxy Pro women's surf title

Advertiser Staff

Peru's Sofia Mulanovich won the Roxy Pro women's surfing contest today at Sunset Beach.

The final day of the event was run in wave-face heights that ranged from 10 to 20 feet — some of the biggest waves ever for a women's contest.

Mulanovich received scores of 6.9 and 6.83 for her two best waves for a total of 13.73.

Australia's Amee Donohoe placed second with a two-wave score of 10.83. Fellow Australians Samantha Cornish and Jessi Miley-Dyer placed third and fourth, respectively.

The Roxy Pro is the second of three events in the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing for women, so Mulanovich is now in contention for the overall Triple Crown championship.

Mulanovich also remained in contention for the 2007 world championship because of her victory today.

Australia's Stephanie Gilmore, who is ranked No. 1 in the world, was eliminated in the quarterfinals.

Mulanovich is now ranked No. 2 in the world.

Wai'anae's Melanie Bartels tied for fifth place and was the top Hawai'i finisher. She won the Roxy Pro last year.

Megan Abubo of Waialua was eliminated in the semifinals and had to be helped to shore by the ocean safety patrol after a wipeout. She was taken to a hospital with what appeared to be injured ribs.

Abubo won the first Triple Crown event two weeeks ago at Hale'iwa Ali'i Beach and is tied with Mulanovich for the overall lead in the women's Triple Crown standings.

The final event in the women's Triple Crown is the Billabong Pro Maui, which is scheduled for Dec. 8 to 20 at Honolua Bay, Maui.

The women's world title and Triple Crown championship will both be decided at the Maui contest.
