Some still without power on Big Island following storm

Advertiser Staff

Hawaii Electric Light Company has announced that storm conditions Wednesday afternoon caused power interruptions to customers on the Big Island, primarily in the South Kona area from Kailua, Kona to Kealia.

Beginning at 1:32 p.m. lightning began striking transmission and distribution circuits in the South Kona area causing equipment damage and power interruptions, company officials said.

Approximately 7,700 customers in South Kona experienced momentary (less than 1 minute) power interruptions when transmission and distribution circuit breakers operated due to lightning strikes. Approximately 500 customers scattered throughout the South Kona area experienced sustained power interruptions due to equipment that was damaged by the lightning. HELCO crews worked through the night to restore power to approximately 350 of the affected customers. As of about 6:30 a.m. approximately 150 customers still remain without power as HELCO crews continue to work to complete the repairs.

Customers who continue to experience power problems and who have not yet filed a report are asked to contact HELCO's Trouble Desk at 808-969-6666.
