Beware of man-of-war at Ala Moana, Waikiki

Advertiser Staff

Beachgoers are being advised to use caution today in the waters of Ala Moana Beach Park and in Waikiki due to the presence of Portuguese man-of-war.

Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city's Emergency Services Department, said approximately 10 to 20 man-of-war have been detected.

Check with a lifeguard to determine whether it's safe to enter the water, Cheplic said.

In the event of a sting, Cheplic noted that the treatment is different with a man-of-war: Rinse the area liberally with saltwater or water.

He also advised that the regular monthly influx of box jellyfish is expected on Sunday.
