Gift fair set for Sunday at Church of the Crossroads

Advertiser Staff

Groups hoping to encourage more green holidays and less crass commercialism are sponsoring the Green Market Gift Fair from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Church of the Crossroads, 1212 University Ave.

The event includes ways to simplify the holiday "by giving gifts that give back to our community and environment while reclaiming traditions of the past, saving money, decreasing holiday stress and trash."

The fair offers gift certificates that give back to the community, an opportunity to give gifts from recycled materials and learn how to create gifts at home with your family. For example, you can buy a gift certificate that pays for a school garden lesson at one of Hawai'i's public schools.

Native plants will be for sale, as well as items like reusable grocery totes and biodegradable party supplies. There will be demonstrations throughout the day, such as how to make rain barrel catchments for your garden and green cleaning supplies for your home.

Participating groups include: The Green House, Kokua Hawai'i Foundation, Slow Food O'ahu, Hawai'i HI-5 Program, MA'O Organic Farm, Just Add Water CSA, Habitat for Humanity, Hoa'aina o Makaha, Kamehameha Treehuggers, Native Hawaiian Plant Source, Malama Hawai'i, Wabi Sabi Xeriscaping, Waikiki Worm Company, Styrophobia, Sierra Club and many others. Food will be from Da Spot, Pacifikool Gingerale, Liscious Dishes, and 'Umeke Market.
