Suspicious person reported near UH dormitory

Advertiser Staff

Shortly after 6 this morning, a female resident of the Hale Kahawai dormitory at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa reported that a man attempted to take a picture of her using a cell phone while she showered.

When the girl discovered the man, she apparently screamed and the man ran away. He was chased by other dorm residents, but got away, said Gregg Takayama, UH-Manoa spokesman.

Campus security issued a crime alert early this morning and the Honolulu Police Department is looking for the suspect, Takayama said.

The man was described as 5-feet-8-inches, about 160 to 180 pounds. He had crew-cut black hair, tan complexion and may have been Asian or Polynesian. He was wearing a dark T-shirt and khaki shorts.

Hale Kahawai is a co-ed dormitory located on East-West Road on the UH-Manoa campus. There are about 150 residents in the dormitory. The first and fourth floors are occupied by male students and the second and third floors are occupied by female students.

If anyone has information about the suspect involved, or sees someone matching the description, they are encouraged to call campus security at 956-6911 or HPD at 911.
