Film festival focuses on ocean

The Hawaii Ocean Film Festival, today and Saturday at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa's Spalding Auditorium, showcases independent films and shorts that focus on the big blue and environmental issues.

The schedule:

7-9 P.M. TODAY

  • "Be Cool to the Turtles by Da Honu's" (directed by Eric Caju and Jules Nathan; O'ahu; 5 minutes)

    Sea turtles rap in a live-action music video.

  • "Hawaiian Showers" (directed by Bryce and Jen Groark; Big Island; 5 minutes)

    A look at the symbiotic relationship between Morey eels and tiny clown shrimp.

  • "Encounter" (directed by Bruna Stude; 3 minutes)

    Underwater photographer Bruna Stude's view of a pod of dolphins off the south shore of Kaua'i.

  • "Joy Ride" (directed by Dean Hamer; 7 minutes)

    The history and sociology of body boarding.

  • "Heart of a Soul Surfer" (directed by Becky Baumgartner; 38 minutes)

    The story of surfer Bethany Hamilton, who lost an arm to a shark.

  • "Going to Antarctica" (directed by Teresa Tico; 35 minutes)

    Hawai'i filmmaker Tico's expedition to Antarctica.

    7-9:30 P.M. SATURDAY

  • "Requiem" (directed by Bryce and Jen Groark; Big Island; 40 minutes)

    Documentary focuses on the shark.

  • "Down the Barrel" (directed by Steven B. Lawrence; 24 minutes)

    A look at the feel and appeal of surfing.

  • "Bunker 77" (directed by Takuji Masuda; 8 minutes)

    A preview of a film scheduled for theatrical release next year; this profiles surfer and international playboy of the 1960s and '70s, Bunker Spreckles.
