HAWAII BRIEFS
Quarantined TB patient sentenced

Associated Press

A state judge yesterday refused to require medical evaluations as a probation condition for a man convicted of assault who is suffering from tuberculosis.

Armenio Teodoro, 51, of Wahiawa, was diagnosed with TB after pleading guilty in August. He was arrested and placed in quarantine two weeks ago after failing to report to probation officers.

Officials say Teodoro had failed to take his medication, which would safeguard public health.

District Judge Patrick Border sentenced Teodoro to one year probation without requiring medical evaluations, such as X-rays and blood tests.

Dr. Jessie Wing of the state Department of Health said Teodoro isn't contagious.
