Hawaiian Electric crews continue to work on replacing a power pole damaged by a truck this morning and plan to re-open the right hand, mauka-bound lane of Kapiolani Boulevard by 3:30 p.m. today.

Seventy-five HECO customers around Kaaha Street remain without power after the pole was left split in half at Kapiolani Boulevard and Date Street, HECO spokesman Darren Pai said this afternoon.

The accident occurred around 7:47 a.m. in the mauka bound lane of Kapiolani Boulevard just before the H-1 east on ramp.

It's not clear whether a truck crashed into the pole or snagged a guide wire connected to the pole, snapping it in half, Pai said.

The accident disrupted traffic and initially knocked out service to 1,800 HECO customers in the Kapiolani, Kaimuki and Kapahulu areas, Pai said.

An unrelated, earlier outage affected about 2,000 customers in Palolo Valley. The final 15 customers had power restored at 9 a.m. this morning, Pai said.

A bad "cross arm" on a power pole initially cut off power to Palolo Valley customers at about 5:30 a.m.

Repair crews had power restored to most of the affected customers by 7:45 a.m., Pai said.
