Building to be named for Akira Sakima

Advertiser Staff

The recreation building at Kalihi Valley District Park will be named after former state legislator Akira Sakima at a ceremony Saturday.

Sakima grew up on a pig farm in Kalihi Valley and went on to represent the district in the state House from 1959 to 1976.

He died April 6 at 88 years old.

The building at the park will be named the "Akira Sakima Recreation Center." Mayor Mufi Hannemann will attend the ceremony at the park, along with Sakima's wife and children.

The ceremony will start at 1 p.m.

The recreation center includes a gym, boxing facility, kitchen, complex office, recreation classrooms and community meeting rooms.
