Mat Gamel batted 3 for 4, including a pair of two-run homers, and Jeramy Laster also hit a two-run shot as the North Shore Honu beat the West Oahu CaneFires, 8-3, yesterday in Hawaii Winter Baseball action at Hans L'Orange Park.

Gamel and Laster homered in the seventh, and Gamel added his second homer in the eighth, helping the Honu overcome a 2-0 deficit.

Michael Griffin added three hits and Jonathan Lucroy batted 2 for 2 for North Shore, which swept the two-game series.

Reliever Kevin Roberts earned the victory with two hitless, scoreless innings. He struck out two and did not issue a walk. Starting pitcher Logan Ondrusek worked four shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out two.

Jeff Bianchi and Ian Gac each had two hits for the CaneFires. Starting pitcher Steve Johnson worked four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out five.

Also yesterday, the Honolulu Sharks capitalized on a number of Waikiki BeachBoy miscues to post an 8-3 victory for a split of a two-game series.

The BeachBoys, who committed three errors in the game, unleashed six wild pitches and two passed balls in the first four innings when they saw a 2-0 lead turn into a 4-2 deficit.

Takuya Furuya allowed two first-inning runs and three hits while striking out five to earn the victory.

Shoji Ohhiro and Brandon Snyder each drove in a run for the Sharks.

Waikiki's Hector Pellot and Jeff Kindel each went 2 for 4, the only two batters with multiple hits in the game.


SAILING

UH PLACES SECOND

The University of Hawai'i women's sailing team opened its season with a second-place finish in the Bryson Women's Intersectional at the Stanford Rowing and Sailing Center in Redwood City, Calif., yesterday.

Host Stanford won the two-day, eight-team regatta with a low-best 25 points, capturing both the A (13 points) and B (12 points) divisions.

Hawai'i scored 77 points. Hannah Tuson-Turner (skipper) and Pamela Magasinn (crew) finished runner-up in the B division with 33 points, while Crystal Bronte (skipper), Leanne Horvitz (crew) and Darla Baldwin (crew) totaled 44 points for a fourth-place finish in the A division.


SOCCER

HPU EDGES HILO

Gabe Sugar scored a little more than three minutes into overtime as Hawai'i Pacific edged Hawai'i-Hilo, 3-2, yesterday in the Pacific West Conference men's opener for both teams at HPU's Windward Field.

Aikihide Adachi scored twice for the Sea Warriors (2-3).

Andy Scott-Webster scored in the 87th minute and Kyle Cabison added a goal with less than a minute remaining as the Vulcans (3-5) rallied to send the game into overtime.
